Grolsch brewery halves its CO2 emissions

Grolsch has been proactively reducing its energy consumption and CO2 emissions for many years. The ambition is to have a completely CO2-neutral brewery by 2025, where all the energy used will be generated in a sustainable manner. As of 1 January 2020, Grolsch has taken an important step in this direction and will now use only 100% green electricity generated by European wind turbines for both the brewery and its subsidiary company, De Klok Dranken. This reduces CO2 emissions by 46% (6,700 tons) per year. This is equivalent to the amount of CO2 emissions which are emitted by approximately 3,000 households annually.

A CO2 neutral brewery

Grolsch is proud of the great results it has achieved year after year in reducing energy use and CO2 emissions. The ambition is a fully CO2 neutral brewery by 2025: a brewery in which all the energy used is generated in a sustainable manner. To this end, an energy transition plan has been drawn up which describes how and when fossil fuels will be replaced by sustainable, CO2-neutral energy sources.

Susan Ladrak, Manager Engineering: “Based on our ambition to have a completely CO2-neutral brewery by 2025, I am incredibly proud that we can now take a big step forward by switching to 100% green electricity. This means we are reducing CO2 emissions by 6,700 tons of CO2 per year. At the same time, we are making great progress on the next steps, including replacing natural gas with more sustainable alternatives. This involves working closely with various partners in the region. We feel it is our responsibility to contribute to a better, greener and more circular world.”

Sustainable. Character.

Under the name ‘Sustainable. Character.’ Grolsch has been pursuing an active policy in the field of sustainability for many years. This begins with thinking and acting in circular and inclusive ways. The Grolsch sustainability strategy focuses on six key points:

  1.  Reducing CO2 and energy consumption;

  2.  Maximizing circular packaging;

  3.  Re-using brewery waste;

  4.  Reducing and securing water consumption;

  5.  Stimulating social and economic growth;

  6.  Promoting responsible alcohol consumption.
