Grolsch adjusts energy saving goal from 20% to 35%
Grolsch adjusts energy saving goal from 20% to 35%
- Grolsch saved 7.5% in energy use in the past year
-
In the past year, beer brewer Grolsch has managed to
save an impressive 7.5% on its total energy consumption -
electricity and gas. This is remarkable, because in the previous
year it also managed to save 8.5% in energy consumption. The
results are such that Grolsch chooses to adjust its energy saving
goals from 20% to almost 35% in 2015. The total energy saving
during last year was 8.61 MJ per hectolitre of beer. These savings
equal the average annual usage of approximately 275 households.
Today, Grolsch published its Sustainable & Responsible Business
results of last year. The report, which contains more details about
the different result areas, can be found at www.koninklijkegrolsch.nl.
Brewing beer costs energy; not just the brewing process, but
also the transportation of the beer, the manufacturing of bottles
and the cooling of the end product. To protect the environment,
Grolsch tries to reduce its energy consumption even more. This is
done by energy efficient investments. In this manner, Grolsch saves
money and means, and reduces the emission of greenhouse gasses. In
2015, Grolsch wants to reduce its energy consumption by almost 35
percent compared to 2005.
Specific savings projects
Grolsch has managed to reduce its energy consumption in
the past year with a few specific projects. In this manner, the
brewery was able to limit the heat loss in the brewery by reusing
warm water, lowering the water temperature in certain parts of the
process and improved isolation. By making the ventilation in the
brewery and offices more efficient, Grolsch saved 10 percent in
electricity. In addition, the reduction of the pressure in the
steam boilers resulted in an energy saving that also led to an
increase in efficiency of the boilers of about 1 percent.
Four spearheads
In order to be able to do business in a sustainable and
responsible manner, Grolsch uses the sustainability strategy 'Ten
Priorities. One Future.' by its parent company SABMiller. In doing
so, Grolsch has chosen four spearheads. In addition to reducing its
energy consumption and emission of carbon dioxides, Grolsch also
promotes responsible use of alcohol, the reduction of water usage
and the reduction and recycling of packaging. In the results that
Grolsch published today, the developments of last year can be found
for each of the spearheads.
